What you use it for
The part that keeps your tent standing and that you think about least until it fails. The pegs that come with a tent are almost always the cheapest the maker could source; a handful of better ones on the windward side is the cheapest upgrade you can make to where you sleep. Always carry two to four more than your tent needs: you will lose one in the grass, and then you are standing there with half a tent.
Pitching and care
Drive them in at an angle, head leaning away from the tent, roughly 45 degrees — that way the guy line pulls the peg INTO the ground instead of out of it. In stony ground push and twist rather than hammer: striking through onto a stone is exactly how a peg bends. In the morning pull them with a loop of guy line or another peg as a hook, not by hauling on the fabric.
